Bhante Buddharakkhita and the Growth of Buddhism in Uganda

Born in 1966 in Kampala, Uganda, Most Venerable Dr. Bhikkhu Buddharakkhita did not begin life within the Buddhist tradition. Raised in a Christian family, his path towards Buddhism unfolded years later during his studies in India in 1990. That encounter would eventually shape a spiritual journey that has had a lasting impact on Africa and beyond.

In 2002, Bhante Buddharakkhita was fully ordained as a Theravada Buddhist monk by the late Most Venerable U Silananda at the Tathagata Meditation Centre in San Jose, California. Following his ordination, he underwent eight years of disciplined training under Bhante Henepola Gunaratana at the Bhavana Society in West Virginia. This period of study and practice prepared him for a mission that would later establish a firm foundation for Buddhism in Uganda.

Today, Bhante Buddharakkhita serves as the Founder and Abbot of the Uganda Buddhist Centre in Garuga, Entebbe. What began as a modest effort to introduce the Buddha’s teachings has grown into a recognized spiritual and educational institution. Under his leadership, the Centre has become a hub for meditation, Dhamma study, interfaith dialogue, and community engagement.

His vision extended beyond temple walls. Recognizing the importance of integrating moral values with formal education, Bhante founded the Buddhist Peace School (Pre-School), the Buddhist Peace School (Primary Section), and the African Buddhist High School. These institutions aim to nurture young minds through both academic excellence and ethical development grounded in mindfulness and compassion.

Since 2005, Bhante Buddharakkhita has taught mindfulness meditation not only in Uganda but also in the United States, Singapore, and other countries. His teachings emphasize practical application of the Dhamma in daily life and its role in fostering peace and social responsibility.

His work has also reached academic and humanitarian circles. He serves as a Teaching Professor of Theravada Buddhism at Union Theological Seminary, Columbia University in New York City. In addition, he is a long-time member of Buddhist Global Relief’s advisory council in New Jersey, contributing to initiatives that address poverty and food insecurity through compassionate action.

Bhante Buddharakkhita’s journey and efforts are documented in his book, Planting Dhamma Seeds: The Emergence of Buddhism in Africa, which chronicles the challenges and progress of establishing Buddhist institutions on the continent.

From a young Ugandan student encountering Buddhism abroad to a respected international teacher and spiritual leader, Bhante Buddharakkhita’s life reflects a steady commitment to cultivating wisdom, compassion, and peace in Africa and around the world.
